A poisonous tree

I wanted to strike at the roots of a poisonous tree,
Which has been nurtured under the religious garb;
And which for centuries had been wreaking  havoc,
But its worshipers are calling it their sacred symbol.
 
They gathered around with all the weapons they had,  
Calling  me as a godless creature and enemy of  faith;
Let them worship it, if they think, it is now their fate,
But they will abhor  it, if  its venom touches their life.
